Known and used by civilizations dating at least back to the time of the Greeks, Boron as borax has a long history. Boron is found naturally in seawater, fruits, and vegetables and is concentrated in some volcanic regions of the world. It was isolated and identified as an element in 1808. Its nutritional value has been debated since 1989. It was finally accepted as an essential nutrient element in 1990 after studies showed that it influenced the metabolism of several other nutrient elements including Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphorus. Some now believe there is also a significant synergistic relationship between Silica and Boron.
Research has confirmed that Boron plays several metabolic roles in animal physiology. The list includes:
- Essential in the growth and maintenance of bone
- Active in the production of hormones
- Helps with the absorption of Magnesium
- Reduces C-reactive protein
- Raises the level of enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase
- Improves brain electrical activity
- Essential for parathyroid function
